Top Ten Luxury
Longitude 131°

Tented luxury with a view of the world's most famous rock - what more could you want. No we don't mean one of Elizabeth Taylor's engagement rings, we mean Uluru (Ayers Rock to the politically unsound amongst you). Longitude 131° lies at the gateway of the World Heritage listed wilderness of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the red desert heart of Australia.

The 15 white tented cabins have views of the sun rising and setting over Uluru. You can watch without raising your head off the billowy pillow by pressing a bedside switch that opens the electric blinds.

From the air the two lines of tents look like so many fragile paper butterflies fluttering in the wilderness at, you guessed it, a longitude of precisely 131°. At night above your head you' will find one of the clearest skies in the world, the middle of Australia is so far from anywhere the stars are on fire here. The local Aboriginal people have a wealth of stories about the constellations above your head (and the red earth under your feet) and it is easy to feel the power of this ancient place. The Luxury Travel Bible likes the experience of dining out under the spectacular desert night sky at Table 131°. A three-course dinner under a canopy crowded with stars.

It is worth visiting the rock in all its moods (it turns black in the rain -a rare sight) and to venture out to the honeycomb-like mounds of Kata Tjuta (The Olgas).

Longitude 131°.is one of the last remaining properties of Voyages Hotels & Resorts which has lately sold off a lot of its other luxury holdings - so watch this space.
