Laucala Island, Fiji

The ocean may envelope this latest Fijian 'It' island with its own endless blue, but that hasn't halted the creators of Laucala (pronounced Lau-thala) Island from maxing-out the water experiences. 'King' is the man-made lagoon that snakes and dips and terraces its way out and around from the Pool Bar almost to the ocean's edge. Meandering over a massive 53,820 square feet (5,000 square metres), the pool spills off into waterfalls and is inhabited by plunge-style retreats, boulders and tiny palm-fringed Robinson Crusoe-style islands. For those who like their swims straight up, the lagoon also incorporates an 82 feet long (25 metres) lap pool that ends in a glass-cube. While serious swimmers can negotiate their own ups and downs, backs and forths, The Luxury Travel Bible is happy to lounge this one out to contemplate the cocktail menu and the amazing resemblance of the Pool Bar's architecture of thatched arcs to the white sails of the Sydney Opera House.
