7. Mystery Train: The Madison, Memphis
"It feels cool to be in Memphis," says a young Japanese man gazing out of the window of the soon-to-be-demolished Arcade Hotel, in Jim Jarmusch's iconic 1989 film Mystery Train.

That cool cachet owes more to Jarmusch's gritty vision than to uber-styled designer hotels. If you want to enjoy the Memphis beat of the South Main district, you'll need to head downtown at the end of the night for your creature comforts. The Madison is comfortable and traditional, rather than cutting-edge: good beds, martini lounge, steak restaurant, rooftop garden. And unlike the Arcade Hotel, it's not going to be demolished next week.
