With Waterhouse on South Bund Singaporean design guru Loh Lik Peng has revamped  a former army compound on the Huangpu River and created a 19-room guesthouse with industrial concrete walls and  compact cube-like spaces. This couldn't be further removed from the over-the-top opulence of so many of Shanghai's luxury hotels. Distance-wise it's a stretch too. South Bund is a fair walk from the centre. But like so many Loh properties  (often in unexpected locations  -Town Hall Hotel in London's Bethnal green springs to mind) it's created a vibe all its own. The young and trendy come to IT. Often to enjoy the communal dining at  Table No. 1 restaurant, the first independent venue for Michelin-starred British chef Jason Atherton and one  of the city's best eateries.
